TF11: Theory of Neutrino Physics

Co-Conveners: André de Gouvêa (Northwestern U.), Irina Mocioiu (Penn State U.), Saori Pastore (Washington U.), Louis Strigari (TAMU)

Neutrino Theory Mini-Workshop

The Neutrino Theory topical group is organizing a virtual Neutrino Theory mini-workshop, September 21-23, 10am-2pm CT. The meeting will encompass a broad range of topics in neutrino theory, including neutrinos in astrophysics & cosmology, neutrino cross sections, neutrinoless double-beta decay, oscillations, mass and flavor model building, and BSM physics at neutrino experiments.

We strongly encourage you to submit abstract. Contributed talks are an excellent opportunity for younger people to contribute and allow one to present and discuss topics that were submitted to Snowmass as LOIs. Contributed talks may also serve as a trigger for LOIs.

Your inputs are extremely valuable to the Snowmass effort.

Description

This topical group will concentrate on the theory of neutrinos physics including:

  • Exploring the origin of neutrino masses. What is the physics responsible for nonzero neutrino masses? How does this physics connect to other outstanding questions in particle physics and cosmology
  • Uncovering the fundamental physics of flavor: What precision is required to measure the neutrino oscillation parameters?
  • Addressing current and future neutrino puzzles: Is there new physics behind the short-baseline anomalies?

We will also concentrate on different aspects of theory for neutrino physics including:

  • Understanding astrophysical neutrino sources and how to extract different neutrino properties from cosmology
  • Theoretical challenges associated with the computation of neutrino scattering on different targets and at different energy scales, including CEvNS, neutrino-nucleus scattering up to DIS, ultra-high energy neutrinos scattering on the atmosphere or propagating through the Earth
  • Computation of nuclear-matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decays and related processes
  • Neutrino propagation and flavor evolution in dense environments
  • Establishing connections between searches for new phenomena at neutrino facilities and new-physics models.

LOIs Invitation

Dear Neutrino Enthusiasts,

this is a short message to encourage you to participate in the Snowmass process, which started a couple of months and will end next Summer with a Workshop in Seattle. One way to participate is to submit a letter of interest (LOI).

The purpose of letters of interest is to inform the different topical groups about the distinct topics that should be discussed in the community planning exercise that is Snowmass, advertise your willingness to contribute to discussions of the identified topic at different fora, and communicate to the community at large that you are thinking about writing a Snowmass Contributed Paper.

LOIs are meant to be short and aimed at a relatively broad audience. They do not require that you report on any existing or on-going original work. For more information, see https://snowmass21.org/loi . The deadline is August 31, 2020 (in about three weeks).

If you are planning on submitting an LOI on theoretical topics in neutrino theory, please consider aiming it at both the Neutrino Frontier and the Theory Frontier. Neutrino Physics has a home in several of the Topical Groups in the Theory Frontier, including a dedicated “Theory of Neutrino Physics” topical group TF11.

Thanks,

André, Irina, Louis, Saori (TF11 conveners)

PS - we apologize in advance if you received multiple reminders and requests for Snowmass Letters of Interest.
